How to knit a pumpkin for fall decor

September 18, 2024 · Crochet

Hello everyone,

This pumpkin is knit in one piece and is a fun and easy project. It uses less than a skein of yarn and it took me less than 2 hours to make. For the stem I used a twig from my garden, making this piece mixed media. One can also choose to knit their own stem, using a colorful yarn of one’s own choice. Written instructions are below, as well as the attachment for the video tutorial. Happy knitting, happy pumpkin-ing. Hope you like it!

Materials:

Yarn- https://amzn.to/4dabXf8
Knitting needles: https://amzn.to/4gsZRAG(I did used the interchangeable knitting needle set but this is the same company)
Tapestry needle
Scissors
Small wood or bamboo branch for the stem, (or a thick wire wrapped in your choice of color yarn).
* Use left over yarns and failed projects for the filling.

Any category 4/medium worsted weight yarn would work for this project but some of my favorite yarns below that would be great option to make this pumpkin.

YARN SUBSTITUTIONS:

https://amzn.to/4daaMwf I love this cotton yarn for any projects. Lion Brand Pima cotton yarn is one of my favs. It’s a 100 % Pima cotton yarn, extremely soft and lightweight. If you use this yarn, you will see how incredible it to crochet or knit. It flows very comfortably.

Final measurements:

About 3 inches (7.5 cm) tall
Circumference 16 inches (40.5 cm)

Written instructions:

Row 1: Cast on 58 stitches

Row 2: Slip the first stitch, *Knit next 4 stitches, purl next 4 stitches. Repeat from * until the end of the row. Purl last 5 stitches.

Repeat row 2 until the piece measures 6 inches (15 cm) and bind off.

I found a small piece of branch in my garden and used it as a stem. It looks natural. (There you have it: a cute fall decor pumpkin.)
