Crochet granny square backpack

December 29, 2025 · Crochet Bag

Hello everyone,

This crochet granny square bag is large and sturdy, and lightweight. it’s also very practical and, modern. If you like, you can do lining because of the holes that granny squares have to keep these in place. I also used recycled hard plastic for the bottom of the bag which made the bag held its shape.

I don’t know exactly how much yarn I used for this bag because the yarns I used making this bag were all waste/ left over yarns. But they were all same category/ thickness yarn which is 100% cotton medium weight yarn.

Written tutorial is below, I also attached the YouTube video tutorial of this bag below.

Hope you like this!

Notes (Forming the bag):

First 3 large granny square were made and they were attached together. Then connected granny squares were attached to the round base. And then, yarn was attached to the top and crochet in the round. Drawstring attached to the top. And then lastly, shoulder straps were made and attached to back of the bag.

YARN SUBSTITUTIONS:

https://amzn.to/4qoQvdb “Lily Sugar ‘N Cream ” yarn is another option for this project. This yarn is also medium weight cotton yarn, soft, I have used this yarn for so many projects, for making sweaters, baskets, bags, etc.

https://amzn.to/48JawVS Dishie yarn by Knit Picks also would be an another great cotton option for this make up bag It’s very soft, and lightweight. I have used this yarn many times and loved it. I very much recommend this yarn for making bags, sweaters, cardigans, etc.

With 2 strands of yarn, make a slip knot and chain 6. Sl st to the 6th ch from hook.

Round 4: 1 dc to the same st. *1 dc to next 2 sts. 2 dc to next st. Repeat from * in the round. 60 dc.

Round 5: 1 dc to the same st. *1 dc to next 3 sts. 2 dc to next st. Repeat from * in the round. 75 dc.

At the end of round 9, connect the base to the body of the bag. Connecting the base will be same as connecting the granny squares. Use stitch markers to secure the base so it doesn’t move around while you connect it.

Working on the top of the bag. Attach the yarn. Round 1: 1 dc to each st. 1 dc to each ch 2 space and add 1 dc to each of 3 corners to prevent large hole. you should have total of 102 stitches.

Rounds 2-5: 1 dc to each st around. 102 dc.

Round 6: *Ch 3, sk 1 st, 1 sc to next st. Re. from * in the round. Ch1 and fasten off at the end of the round.

Making the shoulder strap:

Row 1: Ch 8, Starting from the 2nd ch, insert your hook, into the second ch, pull up a loop, continue pulling up a loop from each ch, you have 8 loops on hook, return pass: ch1, yarn over and pull through 2 loops at a time until one loop on hook.

Rows 2-176:  Insert your hook under the second vertical bar on the previous row. YO and pull up a loop through the bar and repeat across the rest of the row, picking up one loop from each vertical bar follow by return pass. And the return pass is the worked the same way for every row.
